September is "Child Car Seat Safety Month"

September is "Child Car Seat Safety Month" and ABC15, along with Sanderson Ford, Sanderson Lincoln Mercury, Sanderson Volvo of Phoenix, St. Joseph's Hospital, Papa Murphy's Pizza, and All Insurance Group together with United Auto Insurance Co. are again hosting "Operation Bundle on Board."
Parents and their children can come to Sanderson dealerships in the Valley to get their child car seats inspected free of charge by trained technicians from St. Joseph's Hospital, Governor's Office of Highway Safety, as well as Valley police and fire departments. Representatives from Injury Free Coalition for Kids @ St. Joesph's Hospital and Medical Center will also be on hand to answer parents' questions.
This is the fourth year for this Emmy winning event, which last year performed hundreds of child safety seat inspections, absolutely free of charge. ABC15's Chief Meteorologist Bill Bellis and Weathercaster Kaley O'Kelley will also be at select locations.

Here are some quick Safety Tips from ABC15
• Stage 1: Children 1 year and 20lbs. should ride rear facing in a vehicle. (Never place a rear-facing car seat in the front seat when there is an active frontal airbag.)
• Stage 2&3: Children between the ages of one to about age four and between 20-40 pounds should be secured in the back seat in a rear facing and or forward facing toddler seat, dependent upon the seat that you have.
• Stage 4: Booster seats are for children who have outgrown a convertible seat. Booster-weight children are between approximately 40 and 80 pounds and are usually between 4 and 8 years old. A booster seat protects a child from serious injuries caused by incorrect sate belt use. Kids between the ages of four and eight or 40-80 pounds and less than 4'9" in height, should be properly restrained in the back seat in belt positioning booster seat.
• Stage 5: Children who have outgrown booster seats should use a lap/shoulder belt. Ensure that the lap belt fits across the child's hips does not ride up across the stomach. The shoulder belt should fit across the center of the shoulder and not across the face or neck.
• Children under the age of 13 years of age should always ride in the back seat.
