ASU Gammage 2016-2017 season: construction begins to add restrooms, elevator; free parking moves

In two short weeks, theatergoers will flood through the doors of ASU Gammage to see Cabaret, the theatre's season opener.

Before the curtain rises, there are a couple of things you'll want to know. ASU's Parking & Transit Services has made some slight parking changes that may affect where you park on show nights, and construction on the theatre's renovations is underway.

Scroll down to learn about the changes and projects:

PARKING

AT ASU GAMMAGE:

Guests will be able to park for free at ASU Gammage until 6:25 p.m. After that, vehicles will be directed to park at ASU's Lot 20, which is located at University and Mill Avenue (where the Chili's used to be).

AT LOT 20:

Parking in Lot 20 will be free. Guests will then have to walk along Mill Avenue to the theatre. It is about a half-mile walk, which should take 10-15 minutes.

AT APACHE LOT:

In past years, vehicles would be directed to the ASU Apache Lot on Lemon Street. That will still be an option, but it is no longer free. Parking is $3 an hour. The max rate is $12. This is close to the theatre -- less than a tenth of a mile away -- and should take less than five minutes to walk.

GOLDEN GAMMAGE INITIATIVE - UNDER CONSTRUCTION

Over the summer, ASU Gammage began construction to add new restrooms and an elevator that has access to all levels of the theatre. This is part of a $16.2 million campaign to preserve the theatre for future generations, as well as to address patron complaints.

Last year, the theatre implemented a new sound system. The latest and current project will add approximately 70 stalls to the women's restrooms and two elevators. It is anticipated to be completed by Spring 2017.

The construction project will not affect the performances, but guests should be aware that there is a construction site nearby.

GOLDEN GAMMAGE INITIATIVE - FUTURE PROJECTS

Fundraising for Gammage's revitalization efforts is still underway. Future projects will include replacing the stage and the carpet throughout the facility, and resurfacing the building's exterior.

Those portions of the project are still being funded. If you'd like to help, you can do so here.
