Proponents of Prop 205 are hoping some star power will give them the edge to pass the initiative to legalize recreational marijuana.
According to the Campaign to Regulate Marijuana Like Alcohol, Susan Sarandon recorded a voice message urging Arizonans to vote yes on Prop 205. It will be used for telephone calls to Arizona voters.
"Regulating marijuana will take it out of the hands of criminals and instead generate jobs and tax revenues," the message says in part. You can hear the whole thing here.
"Ms. Sarandon is one of the most widely recognized and well-respected actresses in the nation," said CRMLA Chairman J.P. Holyoak. "She has been an outspoken advocate for social justice and sensible criminal justice reform, and we are proud to have her support. Like most Arizonans, she does not think adults should be slapped with felonies simply for consuming a substance that is less harmful than alcohol."
With the election so close, hundreds of thousands of dollars are pouring into the coffers of both the pro-marijuana and anti-marijuana camps.
This week, special interest group 'The Marijuana Policy Project' made a $300,000 donation to the effort to legalize. The Arizona Chamber of Commerce pumped $260,000 into the No on Prop 205 war chest this week.
