An armed homeowner in north Phoenix fired a shot at an armed intruder forcing him to run from his home.

Phoenix police report that on Saturday, a man later identified as 44-year-old Virgil Edward Hughes, forced his way into a home near 35th and Dunlap avenues.  Police say he broke the door jam and rushed into the home. 

The homeowner reported that he saw a handgun on the Hughes’ hip, grabbed his gun and fired one shot, missing Hughes but hitting the wall.

Hughes continued running into the home crashing into the door before turning around and running out the front door.

Police located Hughes in the area and say he was in possession of methamphetamine.

Hughes is from Cottonwood, Arizona and was arrested for burglary and drug possession.
