How to fight inaccurate property tax values

As you work to file those income taxes, get ready.

Property taxes value notices are coming.

But are you paying too much?  Are you paying for space you don't have?

Karen let me know that on paper, her house keeps getting bigger.

She says it went from 1,650 square feet when she bought it, to 1,890 square feet and in 2014 it was 2,157 square feet on her property taxes.

AND SHE NEVER ADDED ON!

Karen fought back and had her house re-assessed through the county

That measurement showed 1,643 square feet.

Karen got back $1,000 in overpaid property taxes.

By law, she could only go back three years.

You can fight back too.

This year in Maricopa County, you have until April 19 to file a complaint with your county's Assessor's office.

They have until August 15 to decide.

You then have 25 days to fight that decision by filing a complaint with the State Board of Equalization.

If you missed a deadline, take it to tax court before December 17.

And let me know what you find.
