The Phoenix Police Department said an on-duty officer died after experiencing a "medical event" Wednesday.
Officials say the officer was taken to the hospital for medical care, though the event did not occur during a call for service.
On Thursday, Phoenix PD tweeted about the death of Officer Mark Aker writing: He joined the department in 1994 and was assigned to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct.
We are deeply saddened to announce the passing of Officer Mark Aker who passed away from a medical event on-duty on May 10, 2023. He joined the department in 1994 and was assigned to the Maryvale Estrella Mountain Precinct.

No other details have been released.
The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association released the following statement regarding Aker's death:
The Phoenix Law Enforcement Association is heartbroken over the unexpected loss of Officer Mark Aker yesterday.
For nearly 30 years, Officer Aker served the citizens of Phoenix with the utmost integrity and dedication.
We grieve with his family and ask that you keep them in your thoughts and prayers.
The Phoenix Police Department is also mourning the loss of Sergeant Tim Wheeler who died from a medical event at home on Tuesday. In a tweet, Phoenix PD wrote: Sgt. Wheeler joined the department in 2007 and was assigned to the Desert Horizon Precinct. Rest in peace Sgt. Wheeler; you will be dearly missed.
