Dog rescued from meat trade finds home in PHX

A dog that was born to be killed and consumed as a part of the South Korea dog meat trade was rescued and has found a new home in Phoenix. 

Chi Chi, which means "loving" in Korean, grew up in cruel living conditions while her body was being prepped for slaughter, Shannon Keith, president of the Animal Rescue Media & Education organization which helped rescue the dog, said.

For two years, the dog was hung upside down with her legs bound together while being tortured. She was beaten in the darkness and left hanging, as this was believed to make her flesh more tender in preparation for the trade.

Chi Chi's legs were bound so tightly that the binding started to enter her flesh, and the dog's legs became so infected that her flesh started to rot off of her bones. Because of this, the dog was thrown out in a trash bag and left to die as her "meat" had become rotten and unsuitable for consumption, Keith said.

Rescuers located Chi Chi in the trash bag in a region of South Korea where dog meat slaughter is well-known. The dog was taken to a veterinarian where it was determined her legs needed to be amputated quickly in order to save her life.
