SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Authorities are investigating an in-custody death at the Scottsdale jail.
The police department says officers arrested 53-year-old Matthew Chase on Wednesday on a warrant for probation violation. Police say he was arrested without incident around 3 p.m. and taken to the jail for booking.
He remained in a cell at the jail near Scottsdale Road and Indian School throughout the night. Thursday morning, jail staff noticed Chase was bleeding from the nose. Police say he was standing, alert, and denied needing medical attention.
Jail workers requested medical assistance despite Chase's denial. Before paramedics could arrive, police say Chase lost consciousness and fell to the floor.
Chase was taken to the hospital, where he was pronounced dead just before 7:30 a.m., police said in a news release.
Police say Chase was not combative and did not engage in any struggle during his arrest and detention. Police say his death appears to be the result of a medical event, but an autopsy from the medical examiner's office was not complete yet as of Thursday afternoon.
