Yavapai deputies: man dies after fall from peak

Posted
Officials say a man has died after falling off a peak in Yavapai County.

Sheriff's deputies identified 79-year-old Duane Wood on Sunday as a hiker killed while attempting to hike Turret Peak.

According to Yavapai County sheriff's spokesman Dwight D'Evelyn, Wood and a friend were trying to climb an area that had no marked trails Thursday morning.

The friend told deputies Wood slipped while looking for footing and fell at least 50 feet.

An Arizona Department of Public Safety crew located the pair.

The crew says Wood suffered a visible head injury and pronounced him dead.

His body has been turned over to a medical examiner's office to determine the exact cause of death.
