PHOENIX — Phoenix police are investigating the cause of a deadly crash in Phoenix Saturday night.
Emergency crews were called to the area of 63rd Avenue and Van Buren Street around 7:15 p.m. for reports of a crash.
During the investigation authorities said it was determined that a Ford Mustang was traveling west on Van Buren Street when it crossed the line and hit oncoming traffic, hitting a Chevy Cruze.
Phoenix firefighters transported two occupants of the Mustang and one occupant of the Cruze to a hospital. Their current conditions are not known.
Crews with the Tolleson and Phoenix fire departments had to extricate a third person from the Mustang. He was pronounced at the scene. Phoenix PD identified him on Sunday as 18-year-old Jorge Alvarez.
Authorities say speed of the Mustang appears to be a contributing factor in the crash, but there are no indications of impairment.
Phoenix PD also says there is no information that street racing may have contributed to the crash.
The investigation remains ongoing.
