Former Arizona Governor Jan Brewer sat down exclusively with ABC15 Tuesday to share her reaction regarding Senator Jeff Flake's decision not to run again in 2018

Brewer praised the senator, saying she supported him in 2012, even contributed to his campaign.

Brewer points to a changing political landscape — one that is getting tougher and tougher every day.

"Politics is not for sissies," she explains. " It's a tough election year. Things are so different than they have ever been before."

Brewer says she was in the car Tuesday when she found out that Flake wasn't running. It was news that not only caught her off guard but also much of the country. Once again, Brewer points to a changing political landscape for clues.

"Unfortunately, change is on the forefront, and he [Flake] was part of that," she said.

Brewer says that change includes voters who feel bolder and more powerful because of social media.  There's also a change in the political landscape with more Independents registered in Arizona than ever before.

Brewer even sees the changes in her own party.

"We're the Grand Old Party. It's unfortunate because unlike the Democrats who follow in line like little sheep, the GOP sometimes, they eat their own."
