Mediation will start today to help Phoenix avoid a bus strike.
Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton's office says they want to be proactive so they're bringing in former Arizona Supreme Court Chief Justice Ruth McGregor to help broker a deal.
McGregor served on the Arizona Supreme court from 1998-2009, serving as Chief Justice starting in 2005.
The contract between bus operator Transdev and the union expired in June 2015, but was extended to September. At that time, the union voted to authorize a strike. Both sides have been in talks since then, even meeting with a federal mediator as recently as a few weeks ago.
Dozens of routes could be impacted if there is a strike, including ones along Central Avenue, Camelback Road, 7th Street, and 7th Avenue.
