A man was killed overnight after he helped a woman fend off a purse snatcher in Phoenix.
Around 12:30 a.m., officers arrived in the area of 48th Street and Interstate 10.
Police said a few people were standing outside an apartment complex when the suspect approached and attempted to steal a 23-year-old woman's purse.
Miguel Jose Briseno, 42, tried to help the woman, which started a fight with the alleged suspect, according to police. Briseno’s neck was cut in the process.
Police said the suspect then let go of the purse and ran away.
Police said Briseno was left bleeding from the neck after the fight. He was transported to the hospital where he died from his injuries.
Briseno’s sister told ABC15 that he was a father of three children.
A GoFundMe has been set up to help with funeral expenses. All extra donations will reportedly go toward college funds for his kids.
The suspect is believed to be a dark-skinned male, who was last seen wearing all black, police said.
“It’s very hard for me to say that you shouldn’t do anything. Just let it happen and be a good witness,” said Phoenix police Officer James Holmes. “I don’t think there’s a lot of folks that would do that, but we always have to give that warning out.”
