A woman who attempted to commit suicide while in police custody has died at the hospital, Phoenix Police say.
Sgt. Vince Lewis identified the woman as Yulma Violette, and confirmed she was pronounced dead at the hospital on Tuesday.
Lewis said the woman was the only person in the back of the van on Oct. 12, and that officers found her unconscious and hanging by a shoelace from a vent upon arrival at a booking facility.
She was being transported from one police station to a booking facility at another early that morning.
Lewis says officers cut her free and began life-saving efforts, but she was transported to the hospital in grave condition.
According to Lewis, Violette was taken into custody on charges of criminal damage domestic violence, aggravated assault domestic violence and aggravated assault on police.
