PHX approves Uber, Lyft pickups at airports

The Phoenix City Council has approved a measure that will allow ride-sharing companies to pick up rides from the city's airports.

The council voted 6-3 to approve an amendment to city code permitting businesses like Uber and Lyft to take people from Sky Harbor, Deer Valley and Goodyear airports.

The measure creates "a balanced and equitable playing field for authorized commercial ground transportation providers," according to information in the city council packet. Previously, ride-sharing companies could only drop people off at Phoenix airports.

The push to add service from, in addition to service to, Sky Harbor and the other Phoenix airports has gone on for more than half a year.

A city spokesperson said pickups were slated to begin sometime this summer, perhaps as early as next month.
