Phoenix police say a woman remains hospitalized in grave condition after attempting suicide while being transported in a police van.

Sgt. Vince Lewis says the woman was the only person in the back of the van and that officers found her unconscious and hanging by shoelace from a vent upon arrival at a booking facility.

She was being transported from one police station to a booking facility at another early Wednesday morning.

Lewis says officers cut her free and began life-saving efforts but that she is not expected to survive.

According to Lewis, the woman was taken into custody on charges of criminal damage domestic violence, aggravated assault domestic violence and aggravated assault on police.

An investigation is underway. The woman's identity hasn't been released.
