Woman dies after PHX officer-involved shooting

An armed woman died Sunday night after an officer-involved shooting near 19th Avenue and Indian School Road, according to the Phoenix Police Department.

Phoenix police said officers were responding to several calls about a 36-year-old woman shooting a gun along a canal on Heatherbrae Drive when they encountered the suspect.

When officers arrived on the scene they evacuated residents from the area. Officers attempted to communicate with the woman through the open door and by telephone but they were not successful.

After unsuccessful attempts of trying to communicate with police, the woman appeared at the open window, pointed the handgun at herself and around the window.

According to police, the woman suddenly point the gun at two officers. One of the officers fired one shot at the woman which ended the confrontation.

The 36-year-old woman was transported to the hospital where she died from her injuries.

The involved officer, a 40-year-old man with 8 years of service has been placed on administrative leave pending a review of the incident.
