Maricopa County and state officials plan Monday to certify results from Arizona's Aug. 30 primary election, moves that would set the stage for a recount of the still-undecided race for the Republican nomination in a Phoenix-area congressional district.
State Senate President Andy Biggs leads former internet executive Christine Jones by 16 votes in the 5th Congressional District's unofficial results.
State law requires a recount because of the small margin. It's expected to take several days.
Biggs' margin increased from eight votes after the county Friday counted 18 additional ballots under court order. Those ballots were cast by voters who weren't told when they went to incorrect polling places that their provisional ballots wouldn't be counted.
The GOP primary winner will be favored to win the heavily Republican district's open seat.
