Southwest Airlines is continuing to invest in and expand at Phoenix Sky Harbor.

On Wednesday, Southwest Airlines announced its future plans to occupy a fourth concourse within Terminal 4, which will give the airline eight more gates to schedule flights in and out of Phoenix.

The concourse is not scheduled to open until 2021. When it does, it will bring the airport's total concourses to eight.

"We've never wavered in our commitment to serving Phoenix's travelers," said Southwest's President Tom Nealon in a prepared statement. "Our customers tell us they love the hospitality they receive at Sky Harbor and we're looking forward to welcoming them into our new space when the new concourse opens in just a few short years."

Currently Southwest operates three concourses at Sky Harbor.

The airline also announced it would invest more than $40 million to expand its maintenance facility at the airport, including an additional hangar and two maintenance bays, according to a news release.

Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton said in a prepared statement that "Southwest Airlines has always been a vital partner for Phoenix, and their continued investment in Sky Harbor and commitment to this market demonstrates how important we are to them."
