The Maricopa County Sheriff’s Office says a detention officer at the Estrella Jail in Phoenix saved a suicidal inmate from serious injury or possible death.

Detention Officer Ramirez came to the rescue after an inmate attempted to jump over a railing at the jail.

The incident happened Monday evening on the top tier of the two level housing unit, a 20-foot drop. Officer Ramirez was able to grab hold of the inmate and pull him back over the railing.

The inmate was let out of their cell to be taken to medical after making suicidal statements to the officer.

Sheriff Joe Arpaio commended Officer Ramirez for risking her life to save the inmates.

Officer Ramirez was injured during the incident but has returned to work.
