The Phoenix Fire Department battled a third-alarm fire at a recycling plant Friday afternoon.
Smoke from the fire could be seen from most of the Valley.
Firefighters say the fire started around 1 p.m. at the plant near 15th Avenue and Buchanan. Firefighters worked to prevent the fire from spreading to any other structures on the property and in the area.
The call was upgraded to a third alarm due to the fire extending to additional bales of cardboard and to maintain the rotation of firefighters on scene. As of 4:30 p.m, fire crews had the main fire under control.
It's unclear what started the fire at this time.
Fire officials say they are working with representatives from the Department of Environmental Quality to monitor the air quality in the area. Officials have determined the smoke is not posing any significant risk to homes or businesses in the area.
