Officials are investigating after reports of a shooting on State Route 51 near Thomas Road that killed one woman.
According to the Phoenix Fire Department, a woman was shot while driving on SR-51 right after 7 p.m. The Phoenix Police Department said the woman, who was taken to a hospital in extremely critical condition, died. She was traveling alone in her vehicle at the time of the shooting.
Police said the woman was shot by an occupant who was traveling in another vehicle. There were three suspects, all described as Hispanic men, in the white pick-up truck at the time of the shooting.
Police are looking for the white truck with ladder racks attached to it and a toolbox in the back in connection to the shooting. They believe the vehicle may have exited on Thomas Road, but it has not yet been located.
The white truck was driving aggressively prior to the shooting, officials said. Police did stop several vehicles in the area but none were connected to the shooting.
The woman who was shot told officials it appeared the truck was following her, but the reason why is unknown. Police said the woman called 911 and dispatchers heard about three shots fired during the call before the call ended. When officers arrived at the scene, the woman was found. She had crashed her vehicle on the SR-51 at the mini-stack.
Police also added that several collisions involving four vehicles related to the shooting also happened in the area. Two people traveling in one of those vehicles were taken to hospitals for treatment of minor injuries.
Roadways were closed down for some time for the investigation.
Both the Arizona Department of Public Safety and the Phoenix Police Department are investigating the homicide.
