A wrong-way driver died Thursday night in a crash at Southern and 13th avenues, according to the Phoenix Police Department.
Officials said the driver was traveling at a high rate of speed in the eastbound lanes of Southern Avenue shortly before 8 p.m. when he crossed into the westbound lanes and collided head-on with a pickup truck.
The wrong-way driver was pronounced dead on scene and two people, a man and woman, in the pickup truck were taken to a hospital in critical condition, the Phoenix Fire Department says.
Drivers are urged to avoid the area as Southern Avenue is expected to be closed throughout Thursday night and into the early Friday morning hours.
