Homeless vets forced to leave 'Camp Alpha'

A group of homeless veterans must find another place to stay after the city of Phoenix told them their camp violates city codes.

"Camp Alpha," as the veterans call it, is located near 19th Avenue and Hatcher.

Sunday morning, volunteers plan on helping the veterans pack up their belongings and tear down the camp.

The city says the camp violates two codes: one that bans the open storage of supplies, and another that bans the construction of a camp without a permit.

Now camp organizers are currently looking for a vacant building.

"It wasn't a plan to relocate and find a location, so we're just going to pack everything up and store it at the time being until we can figure out the city zoning and permits, and just go the legal route," said Aaron Pomprenke, the founder of Camp Alpha.

Early Sunday morning, veterans told ABC15 that 12 veterans were there overnight, and most don't know where they will be going next.
