The Arizona Department of Public Safety said a naked man has died after being hit by a car on Interstate 17 Friday morning.
The incident happened sometime before 4:30 a.m near Northern Avenue. He was taken to the hospital in critical condition, according to officials.
DPS said Phoenix police received a call about a man involved in an altercation at the Marriott Residence Inn near I-17 and Dunlap Avenue.
Police arrived and learned that an African-American man had gotten naked, fled the scene and went across the fence to the freeway.
The man reportedly laid down in lanes and got hit by a car when he stood up. It's unclear what led to the man's decision making.
DPS said the car that hit him stopped after the collision.
Details on the man's identity and age have not yet been released.
I-17 southbound was closed at Dunlap for hours as officials investigated the incident. The southbound lanes have since reopened.
