Wendy and Kansas Lavarnia, the parents of a 9-year-old boy who was shot and killed by his two-year-old brother, have pled not guilty to charges in their son's death.

In March, Phoenix police responded to a home near 35th Avenue and Cactus Road after Landen Lavarnia was shot in the head by his toddler brother.

Landen was taken to the hospital where he later succumbed from his injuries.

Both parents were charged with 1st degree murder and charges of child abuse and hindering prosecution in the death of their son.

Wendy Lavarnia had told police that she left the loaded gun on their bed near her two and four-year-old sons when she went to go retrieve a holster.

As she returned, she saw the two-year-old child holding the gun and Landen had been shot.

Police later learned that Wendy had allowed the toddler to pull the trigger of the gun when it was unloaded.
