Republican state Sen. Steve Montenegro is resigning his seat so he can devote his full attention to his run to replace U.S. Rep. Trent Franks.

Montenegro resigned Friday and a Republican will be chosen by Maricopa County Board of Supervisors in the coming weeks to fill his seat.

He is one of several Republicans who have either announced or are considering running in the heavily-GOP district covering the northwest Phoenix suburbs.

Others considering a run include Sens. Debbie Lesko and Kimberly Yee and Reps. Tony Rivero and Darin Mitchell.

Former Corporation Commissioner Bob Stump and former state Rep. Phil Lovas say they're seeking the Republican nomination.

Franks resigned last week amid sexual harassment allegations. A special primary election is set for Feb. 27 with the general election on April 24
