PHOENIX — Several families are left without a home after a fire ripped through an apartment complex in west Phoenix.

Firefighters were called to the building near 35th Avenue and Indian School Road around 1:00 a.m. Saturday.

Initial 911 calls indicated heavy smoke coming from the balcony of a second floor apartment.

Crews were able to douse the flames on the second story of a three-story complex and stop it from spreading to other floors.

One person was treated for smoke inhalation but did not need to go to a hospital.

A total of six residents were impacted by the fire and smoke and are being displaced.

The American Red Cross is stepping in to help the families in need.

The cause of the fire remains under investigation.

No firefighters were hurt.
