Three people were hurt in a wrong-way crash along the US-60 in Mesa on Wednesday night.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety first received calls of the wrong-way driver just before 9 p.m. Witnesses reported seeing a car that made a U-turn near Power Road before heading wrong-way in the westbound lanes.

Callers also reported that a silver Nissan Xterra side-swiped a Toyota Prius and nearly hit a Chey Malibu.

The initial collision involving the Prius caused the Prius to swerve and it was hit by a Chevy Silverado.

A chinchilla in the Silverado was killed.

All three people who were injured suffered non-life-threatening injuries.

DPS says the driver of the wrong-way vehicle was an elderly woman.
