Officials say multiple people were injured in a wrong-way crash along the Loop 202 overnight.

The crash occurred after 1 a.m., shutting down the Loop 202 in east Mesa near the US-60.

According to the Arizona Department of Public Safety, a vehicle was reportedly driving reckless in the median. An armed off-duty Phoenix officer saw and tried to intervene, but never actually got to the vehicle.

The driver then took off and drove through the median, headed northbound in the southbound lanes on the Loop 202.

At that point, the driver struck a vehicle with three people inside. All four people were taken to the hospital with serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Impairment is suspected in the crash. DPS says the suspect driver reportedly made statements about taking "illicit drugs" and driving for an extended period of time.

The suspect has only been identified as a man in his twenties or thirties.

The freeway was blocked for several hours for the investigation. It reopened around 5 a.m.
