An officer shot and killed a man reportedly pointing a rifle out a window Monday night at a Mesa hotel.

According to Mesa police, officers went to the La Quinta Inn around 9:20 p.m. near the US 60 and Superstition Springs Boulevard.

Two guests in the swimming pool area reported that a man was pointing a rifle several floors above the pool, police said. Officers were able to find him on the fifth floor.

Officers then told the people in the room to come out, so a male and female walked out.

The female was reportedly detained without a struggle.

The male subject was not cooperating with police and began reaching toward his lower back where officers couldn’t see his hands, police said.

He reached toward his lower back several times and was told not to conceal his hands.

An officer then felt threatened when he reached behind him and shot the suspect, police said. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

The investigation is ongoing. Names have not been released at this time.
