Officials say a woman was hit by a car and killed in Mesa early Thursday morning.
The crash occurred near University and Center around 4 a.m.
According to information at the scene, the victim, believed to be a woman in her forties, died from her injuries.
Police say she had been driving westbound when she stopped and got out of her vehicle in the middle lane. At that point, an eastbound vehicle hit her.
Officials speculate that the woman may have been assisting an injured animal. ABC15 crews on scene saw what appears to be a cat deceased in the roadway.
Impairment is not believed to be a factor in the crash.
The crash investigation is blocking eastbound lanes of University Drive. It’s expected to remain closed for several hours.
