A judge has released heavily-redacted body camera footage that shows the moments leading up to a deadly officer-involved shooting at a Mesa hotel.

Officer Philip Brailsford, who has since been fired from the Mesa Police Department, is charged with second-degree murder in the Jan. 18 shooting of Daniel Shaver at the La Quinta Inn & Suites.

Shaver was at the hotel on a work trip from Texas when police got a call about a man pointing a gun out of his room’s window, according to Mesa police.

In the video from Brailsford's body camera, armed officers can be seen in the lobby of the hotel and taking an elevator up to Shaver's room.

"We're going to bring them out and try to get someone to cooperate with us," an off-camera officer can be heard explaining to his team. He then calls out to Shaver and a woman inside his room, ordering the woman out.

As the officer is heard saying "we have one coming out," the video clip comes to an end.

A second video, from another of the responding officers, shows the same scene from a different vantage point, and also includes footage of the officer escorting the woman out of the hotel. Shaver cannot be seen in either of the clips released Tuesday.

Both the State of Arizona and lawyers representing Brailsford had previously petitioned the court to keep body camera footage of the shooting sealed.

"There is no dispute he [Brailsford] caused the death of the victim," Judge Myers has said. "The question is really his state of mind and whether or not there is any legal justification to his actions."

Brailsford maintains he opened fire out of fear that Shaver was reaching for a gun as Shaver was laying on the ground.
