The Pinal County Sherriff's Office is investigating a deadly school bus crash that happened Tuesday afternoon.

The crash happened near Gantzel Road and Bella Vista Road around 1:45 p.m.

PCSO says no children were on the bus when it crashed into a fence.

According to PCSO, two teachers tried to perform CPR on the driver, 74-year-old Jerzy Adamsyzk, but he did not survive.

The bus had reportedly just left Poston Butte High School to go pick up students, so the only other person on board was an assistant bus driver.

PCSO says they’re working to determine what caused the crash, or if there may have been a medical episode that occurred.

The assistant bus driver was taken to the hospital out of precaution.

"Our bus drivers are the first people to see our kids in the morning and the last to see them on the way home, they form a special bond with the students," said Chris Knutsen, Interim Superintendent for the Florence Unified School District. "Of course our first priority is the kids, and our kids are all safe their homes now and we will have counseling services for the students that are on his bus tomorrow, it's going to be a traumatic thing for them as well."
