A "severely impaired" wrong-way driver stopped in the southeast Valley early Thursday morning reportedly assaulted several troopers during the incident.

The driver, identified as 25-year-old Megan Melanson, got on State Route 51 at Highland around 2:25 a.m. and continued driving 20 miles until she was stopped on US 60 near Alma School.

Troopers tried to stop Melanson several times with stop sticks and by attempting to sideswipe her vehicle, damaging two patrol cars in the process.

Fortunately, no injuries were reported, but according to official documents, Melanson struck two different troopers with a closed fist -- one in the chest and another in the chin.

During a blood draw to determine impairment, she also spit in the face of a trooper.

Melanson admitted to troopers that she had been drinking and should not have been driving. Marijuana was also found in her vehicle.

She has been booked into jail on charges of extreme DUI, aggravated assault, failure to comply, endangerment, marijuana possession and drug paraphernalia.
