The mayor of Guadalupe on Thursday presided over what could be the last town meeting with her at the helm, pending the results of a recall election in less than two weeks.
Mayor Rebecca Jimenez is in a fight for her political survival, and it showed Thursday night.
As she ended the Town Council meeting, she nearly cried as she told audience members how much she enjoyed serving the town.
Voters approved a recall election last year after it was revealed last summer that she pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor forgery-related charge to avoid felony welfare fraud charges. Prosecutors alleged that she illegally obtained food stamps.
She declined to answer a reporter’s questions Thursday night.
Councilmember Angie Perez is running against Jimenez.
Citing illness, she also declined an interview.
