A 2-year-old boy was taken to the hospital on Thursday morning after nearly drowning in a backyard pool.

Fire officials responded to the home near 54th Avenue and Thunderbird Road after 8 a.m.

At the home, they located the child who was in critical condition. Rescue crews took the boy to the hospital for treatment.

In an update Thursday afternoon, the Glendale Fire Department said the boy remained in critical condition in the ICU.

Officials believe the child was in the pool for about two minutes. He was possibly playing outside with a sibling at the time of the incident.

Video from the scene showed a functioning safety fence around the pool and crews investigating the gates.
