The Arizona Secretary of State’s Office says they met with Department of Homeland Security officials last week to discuss Russia’s alleged attempt to hack election systems in 21 states — including Arizona.

The government told The Associated Press that more than 20 states were targeted by the hackers who are believed to be Russian agents.

The DHS said on Thursday that they could not confirm whether the election system in Arizona was targeted this year. However, the Secretary of State’s Office said Arizona is not considered to be among the 21 states whose voter registration systems were targeted.

Officials said the targeting was mainly to scan, or search, for weaknesses or access points — however, most attempt to compromise networks were unsuccessful.

Illinois is the only state to say hackers were successful in breaching its voter systems.
