Arizona Senate Minority Leader Katie Hobbs says she will run for Arizona secretary of state in 2018.
The Phoenix Democrat's announcement Wednesday means she might face Phoenix Mayor Greg Stanton in the Democratic primary for state government's second highest office.
The incumbent is Michele Reagan, a Republican who has created a committee for a 2018 re-election campaign.
The secretary of state's office oversees elections and performs lesser-known functions such as registering trade names.
Arizona doesn't have a lieutenant governor, and the secretary of state is first in line to become governor if there's a midterm opening.
Stanton has not committed to running for the office. He has said his filing paperwork enabling him to run allows him to consider future opportunities to serve the state.
