Herm Edwards to become the next head football coach at ASU? It seems as though everyone has something to say about it. Mostly negative. In fact, the criticism has been deafening.
I understand the concerns. He hasn’t coached football in nearly a decade and he’s never been a head coach at the collegiate level. But to say this is an absolute disaster before the guy even gets a chance -- before he even gets the job officially -- is premature.
When it comes to Herm Edwards, everyone seems to agree he's an incredibly likeable guy. He's very positive, charismatic and outspoken about his desire to develop young people into good men and good football players. Who are we to say that won’t carry over to a family’s living room? Who are we to say this guy won’t be an outstanding recruiter? We don’t know. But many choose to assume the worst.
Some believe a former NFL head coach can’t effectively relate to high-school athletes. Well, he’s certainly spent a lot of time around them. Every year, Edwards works with the top recruits in the country in the Under Armour High School All-America game.
Now, I'm not saying it's a home-run hire. I’m also not saying it’s a bust. I'm saying: Let's not call for Coach's head before he even gets the job. Maybe, just maybe, it ends up being a good fit.
