Former Arizona Diamondbacks outfielder Raul Mondesi has been sentenced to eight years in prison for corruption and mishandling of public funds while he served as mayor of his hometown of San Cristobal in the Dominican Republic, ESPN reported Thursday.

"The three-judge panel also fined Mondesi the equivalent of $1.27 million for defrauding more than $6 million during his time as mayor from 2010 to 2016. Three of Mondesi's staff members also were sentenced," ESPN reported, adding Mondesi won't be allowed to hold public office in the Dominican Republic for the next 10 years.

Mondesi played for seven MLB teams from 1993-2005, including the Diamondbacks in 2003. He recorded a .302 batting average with eight home runs and 22 RBIs in 45 games with the D-backs.

He was the National League Rookie of the Year with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 1994, a National League All-Star selection in 1995 and a two-time Gold Glove Award winner.
