ASU Gammage scraps paid-parking plan a week after announcing it

ASU Gammage has scrapped its plans to charge a fee for parking ahead of the upcoming season.

The news comes less than a week after the Tempe Broadway theater sent an email to season subscribers announcing that parking would no longer be free.

On Monday night, the theater sent another email to subscribers saying, "although the plan was designed to enhance the parking experience for ASU Gammage patrons, the late rollout and technical difficulties, left us well short of achieving that goal."

Along with "feedback from loyal patrons," the theater decided to cancel the paid parking program.

A spokesperson for ASU Gammage also confirmed the news.

Instead, the theatre will offer free parking at ASU Gammage and at Lot 20 near University and Mill Avenue, as it did last season.

The parking structure off Apache Blvd. will remain a paid lot, although theatregoers will have the option to purchase a $10 pass for weekday shows through ASU Transit's website.

That option will save you $5. It is normally $3 per hour with a max daily rate of $15. Parking will be free on weekends.

ASU Gammage said it will implement a new parking program for the 2018-2019 season and will seek advice from theatergoers "to design a paid parking program that fits the needs of our patrons and works to reduce parking and congestion issues..."

Those who already purchased parking passes for Fun Home, which opens on Sept. 5, or Something Rotten!, will receive a refund.
