PHOENIX — Those looking to support local restaurants and animals at the Arizona Humane Society can do both on Thursday, July 23, during AHS' "Doggie Bag Dine Out" event.

AHS has teamed up with more than 50 coffee shops, dessert shops, and restaurants in the state -- most are located in the Valley and three are in or near Flagstaff -- who have agreed to donate a percentage of their sales from takeout orders on Thursday to AHS. Percentages vary between 10%-25%, depending on the restaurant, according to the website.

"Order your favorite meal for takeout at one of our Doggie Bag Dine Out participating restaurants on July 23rd and a portion of your check will go toward helping AHS provide food, shelter and lifesaving medical care to pets in need," AHS' website reads.

AHS said it costs an average of $1,000 for each animal that arrives at its shelter. Promotions like the Doggie Bag Dine Out help offset those costs, AHS said.

Participating businesses include Daily Dose, Scramble, Social Hall, Freak Brothers Pizza, Grand Avenue Pizza Company, Green New American Vegetarian/Nami, BKD’S Backyard Joint, North Mountain Brewing Company, Lucky Lou's American Grill, Over Easy, Pomegranate Cafe, Uncle Bear's Brewery, Bubba’s 33, Colados, and Tocaya Organica, among others.

Up north, Shift Kitchen and Bar and Over Easy in Flagstaff, and Agee’s Barbecue in Munds Park, are also participating.
