Summer in AZ: When do the community pools open?

Who’s ready to jump in the pool?

May usually marks the first 100-degree day for Phoenix and on May 4 the Valley hit 100 degrees for the first time in 2016. It’s a little early, but not by much. On average, it happens around May 13.

May is also when community pools and water parks from Glendale to Gilbert open up for the summer season.

So, when is your neighborhood watering hole opening up?

CHANDLER

Chandler has six community pools. Most of them officially open for the season at the end of May, however, some of them open early for a pre-season.

Arrowhead Pool:
Pre-season: May 25-27, 28-30 (Memorial Day weekend)
Season: May 31 – July 24.

Desert Oasis Aquatic Center
Pre-season: May 21-22, 27-30,
Season: May 31 – Aug. 9

Hamilton Aquatic Center

GILBERT

Gilbert has four community pools—Greenfield, Mesquite Aquatic Center, Perry and Williams Field. All four are scheduled to open on Saturday, May 21.

The town and the Gilbert Fire Department will also host its Water Safety & Kiddie Carnival event. It will be held from 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. at the Mesquite Aquatic Center, 100 W. Mesquite Street. The cost is $3 per adult and $1 per child. Click here for details.

 

GLENDALE

Glendale has two aquatic centers—Foothills Aquatics Center and Rose Lane Aquatics Center—as well as a splash pad at Heroes Park.

Its summer season begins June 4 and ends August 6. However, the Foothills Aquatics Center is open year-round. The Heroes Park Splash Pad opens on May 28. View hours, program schedule here.

 

GOODYEAR

The Goodyear Pool will open for the summer season on May 29 through September 5. Click here to view hours, admission and program schedule.

 

MESA

All of Mesa’s community pools will open for the summer on May 28 and close on July 24. Hours vary between each pool, while others have separate special hours during the hottest months, June and July.

Mesa’s pools are Brimhall Aquatic Complex, Carson Aquatic Complex, Fremont Aquatic Complex, Kino Aquatic Center, Mesa Aquatic Complex, Rhodes Aquatic Complex, Shepherd Aquatic Complex, Skyline Aquatic Center, Stapley Aquatic Complex. View hours, admission and program information.

 

PEORIA

Peoria has three pools: Centennial, Peoria and Sunrise. All three will open to the public over Memorial Day weekend.

On May 28, Sunrise Pool will host a “Princess and Pirate Party” from 12 – 3 p.m. to support water safety and fun for the little ones. Click here for hours and admission information.

 

PHOENIX

The City of Phoenix has 29 pools around the Valley. The season will open over Memorial Day Weekend (May 28-30).

Cortez, El Prado, Encanto, Falcon, Hermoso, Maryvale, Paradise Valley, Pecos, Perry, Sunnyslope and Washington will be open through Labor Day, Sept. 5. View hours, admission information.

 

SCOTTSDALE

Swimming is already on in Scottsdale. The Cactus, Eldorado and McDowell Mountain Ranch aquatic centers all have open swim available. Summer hours go into effect at the end of May.

The Chaparral Aquatic Center opens on June 6 and will be open until July 28. Click here to view hours, programs and classes available for each of Scottsdale’s facilities.

 

SURPRISE

The Surprise Aquatic Center and Hollyhock Pool will open on May 28 for the summer season. The aquatics center has two slides, a competition pool and a whirlpool. The Hollyhock Pool has a water slide, a spray pad and a 3-lane lap pool. Click here for hours, admission and classes.

 

TEMPE

Tempe’s three splash pads—Jaycee, Esquer, Hudson—opened on April 30. They will run from 10 a.m. – 7 p.m. every day until October 30.

The Kiwanis Wave Pool is actually open all year. The Escalante Outdoor Pool will reopen over Memorial Day weekend and the Tempe Splash Playground at Tempe Beach Park is currently closed for construction. View more information here.

SAFETY TIPS: It gets hot in Arizona and everyone rushes to the pool. Please make sure to watch your children near water, apply sunscreen, drink plenty of water and snacks, and wear a hot to protect yourself from the sun's rays.
