Nick's Heroes: From officer on the job to coach in his free time

PHOENIX — For the past 18 years, most people have called Carl Wunsch "officer." He's been with Phoenix police for 18 years.

But some people call him "coach."

"They're getting to see police officers in a different way," he explained. "Not just guys in uniforms, running around. People they can hang out with. Find out we have lot of things in common."

And one big thing they have in common is basketball. For the past three years, Wunsch and a team of fellow officers have really championed the Police Activities League, or "PAL" program. It's a way for officers to continue to build relationships with kids in at-risk communities.

"It gives them opportunities they wouldn't normally get...I really enjoy getting that opportunity to interact with them and share my love of basketball and knowledge of having played in high school and college."

All around us in the Valley, people go above and beyond to help make our community even better. We want to know who they are! Nominate someone today and tell us why they should be one of Nick's Heroes. They could win a $500 gift card from our friends at Valley Toyota Dealers.
