PHOENIX — Mary Davis knows a thing or two about hearts! After all, she is a cardiac sonographer at Phoenix Children's.
"Fetal echo is my priority, so that's where I really like to image patients," Davis explained. "I can connect with the mom and watch the baby grow and see them come out."
Davis also knows a lot about hearts because she happens to have a really big one. In addition to her work at the hospital, Davis is a Court Appointed Special Advocate, or CASA, who works with children who are abused and neglected and need someone to fight for them.
She also helps train and help other CASA volunteers.
"I get a lot of joy and satisfaction working with the kids. They definitely teach me a lot more than I could ever teach them" she said. "The ability to stumble and pick themselves up and dust off and keep going...they are inspiring and they don't give up."
As if Davis wasn't busy enough, she also helps put together a special Thanksgiving Day meal for kids living in group homes and volunteers for a suicide prevention hotline.
"As a teen, I really struggled with suicidal ideation. If you knew me back then, I was really good at hiding how I was feeling."
And today, she uses the pain from her past to help kids all over the Valley create a better future for themselves.
And Mary Davis, that is why you are one of Nick's Heroes!
