Nick's Heroes: Phoenix fire captain doubles as swim coach

CHANDLER, AZ — "I really still enjoy it. I love getting in the pool," says Phoenix Fire Captain Susan Fawcett. Being in the water is in her veins.

" It taught me about perseverance and working towards a goal and sticking through the hard times. You can't always win at everything but if you work towards a goal, you can succeed!"

Most people know her as Capt. Fawcett, but the students on the Chandler Preparatory Academy swim team know her as "Coach Susie."

"I don't think I'm the best technical coach, but I think I am good at coming to the pool and teaching the kids to believe in themselves and set a goal."

And talk about dedication: Coach Susie will work a 24-hour shift, and still find time to show up at all-day meets for her favorite swimmers.

"She volunteers her time after long shifts to come out and be with the kids and she's coaching them and believing in them and encouraging them to do better," explains Sheri Finlayson, whose daughter is on the swim team.

And when the team's head coach was diagnosed with cancer, Coach Susie was right by her side for every chemo appointment.

"She's a loyal friend and she just gives and gives and gives!"

And Coach Susie, that is why you are one of Nick's Heroes!
