TEMPE, AZ — Tempe Police Officer Daniel Thomas isn't just helping kids shoot hoops, he's also helping them shoot for the stars.

"I'm a pretty decent basketball player, but these kids are good!" Officer Thomas explains, with a smile on his face.

Every other Saturday, Officer Thomas is right here at Tempe's Escalante Center, spending quality time with kids from all over the city. Whether it's a high-five, full court press or just a smile, Officer Thomas is showing these kids that they'll always have someone right there, cheering them on.

"Officer Thomas, even just in coming here on a routine basis, provides that opportunity for kids to see all different varieties and that's what it's really about for us," says Lt. Michael Hayes from the Tempe Police Department.

And did we mention he also helps coach middle school flag football? He does it all while putting in long hours on the streets.

"I'm able to get these kids at a young age and to help bridge that gap between public and officers right now," says Officer Thomas.

And it's that heart of gold that makes you one of Nick's Heroes!
