PHOENIX — The Rural Metro Fire Department has issued a warning to Arizona residents: do not give out personal information over the phone.

According to a post on Rural Metro's Facebook page, residents have received calls from a phone number which appears to come from Rural Metro. The scam continues with the caller on the line pretending to be from the emergency services agency.

The caller allegedly says, "A Rural Metro program is being shut down and you are due a refund," then requests personal information, including Social Security numbers.

"Rural Metro Fire Department customer service representatives will not request personal information such as social security numbers. Outbound calls from Rural Metro Fire Department staff are very limited," the Facebook post reads.

If you receive a phone call like this, Rural Metro encourages you to call (480) 627-6200 or your local law enforcement agency to file a police report.
