A Phoenix company that gathers petition signatures has been charged with allegedly conducting an illegal bonus program for contracted workers gathering signatures for Arizona Proposition 208 ballot initiative.

AZ Petition Partners LLC, which does businesses as Petition Partners, has been charged with 50 misdemeanor counts in connection with alleged payments made to the petition circulators, according to Arizona Attorney General Mark Brnovich.

Each charge carries a potential fine of up to $20,000.

The bonuses were allegedly paid to workers gathering signatures for the Invest in Education ballot initiative, known as Prop 208. The initiative, which succeeded in the Nov. 3 election, will create a state surtax on people earning $250,000 a year or more or couples earning $500,000 per year to fund education.
